Tournament Organiser different Framework due to {Covid-19}

  • The T-20 world cup is going to be approximately six-and-a-half months to go in Australia, the organizing committee remains encouraging about the event but is looking at "different framework" amidst the Covid-19 pandemic that sweeps the world.
  • The health crisis has already led to the cancellation/postponement of many popular sporting events and conjectures are abundant about 2020's ICC event.
  • However, the ICC have maintained a wait-and-watch strategy on this subject, given that it's still early days to make a final call.However, the tournament is seven months ahead.
  • There is still a fair amount of optimism and this was also echoed by Nick Hockley, chief executive of the T20 World Cup organising committee.
  • "We're wanting to give ourselves the best possible chance of going ahead as planned, so there's no imminent or quick decision," Hockley said in an interaction with AAP.
  • "Hopefully it's all resolved and we go ahead. In the event that it isn't completely resolved, we are looking at all the different framework.
  • Which is only prudent.They are collective discussions involving the organising committee, the ICC, all the members.
  • We will keep everyone updated if anything changes. But for now, we're just under seven months away ... we've got a bit of time."
  • The T20 World Cup is slated to kick-off on October 18 with the final scheduled on November 15. Given the popularity of Australian Rules Football aka footy and rugby in the country.
  • The ICC event's scheduling was pitch-perfect, given that the AFL and NRL seasons would have ended prior to the tournament.
  • However, with the COVID pandemic forcing the postponement of these two sporting events, they could now be directly competing with the T20 World Cup in terms of grabbing eyeballs.
  • Despite admitting the challenge at hand, Hockley didn't seem to fussed about the potential competition.
  • "We really feel for the winter codes, obviously they're doing it very tough," Hockley said. "In the event they have extended seasons ... we still think the World Cup is a really strong proposition that might not come here again for 10 or 20 years.
  • "People love a World Cup, cricket is Australia's national sport. We're playing all around the country at venues that are some of the best in the world ... and T20 is the format that appeals to the broadest possible demographic.
